Back in the early, black and white, Cowboy films, the good guys and the bad guys where both wearing their cowboy outfits. The signal to the audience, as to who the good guys and the bad guys where, was depicted by the color of their hats. If you were a good guy, you wore white and the bad guys wore black. The black hats always lost with the white hats always coming out on top.
